With the upcoming firmware update for the PS5, console owners will soon be able to expand the storage space of their PS5 via M.2-SSD slot. This is to unlock the additional slot integrated in the console and thus offer the possibility to extend the 825 GB memory so far. Although the update is currently still in the beta phase and is not yet rolled out for all, but previously tested GEN4-SSDS probably delivered good performance in the test.
External SSDs bring the same performance
At least according to Mike Fitzgerald, the Director of Core Technology at Insomniac Games. The has announced in a tweet that the team has already tested some external SSDs with Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.
The result: The SSDs which corresponded to Sony's specifications seem to deliver an equally good performance as the internal SSD and no noticeable difference in loading times to deliver.

At the same time Fitzgerald explains that Gen4 M.2 Drives were tested, which were below the mentioned requirements and thus led to up to 15% slower loading times in the test. Which SSDs were used exactly, he did not lead.
However, the first SSD manufacturers have already responded to Sony's beta update and announced whether their SSDs complies with the specifications mentioned by Sony.

Currently, the system software update is only available to beta users, features and specifications can still change until the official release of the update.
Currently, the SONY recommended SSDs with at least 5,500 MB / s are correspondingly not only extremely fast, but also expensive. After all, there are also a few more cheaper options. If you already want to know how to install the SSD in your PS5 and what else needs you, you will find the console owners instructions here.
